What content can be uploaded into courses
Courses provide you with a structure within which you can deliver your learning content to your learners.
In this article we cover the different types of content you can include in your courses. If you haven't already, you can also take a look at our article Creating your first course as this provides a walk through of the course structure and controls.
Content Overview
We've split the different content materials into four categories:
- Course Materials
- Live Lessons (webinars)
- Face to Face lessons (sessions held outside of the training platform)
- Assignments
- Questionnaires
1. Course Materials
Videos
Supported file types are mp4 (video) – max 2GB
We support mp4 as this file type is most widely supported across all browser types.
If your files are larger than the maximum upload size, Handbrake is a great tool for compressing your video file size, without affecting the final output quality.
Recommended video spec:
- Codec: h.264
- File Type: mp4
- Resolution: between 720p or 1080p
- Bitrate: up to 5,000 kbps (users with poor internet connections may not be able to play higher bitrate videos)
- Framerate: constant, up to 30 frames per second (some devices cannot play variable framerate videos)
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 works best for courses and landing pages
The above formatting will ensure optimal performance for your learners across all device types and internet speeds.
Audio Files
Supported file types are mp3 (audio) – max 2GB
- Codec: AAC (Advanced Audio Codec)
- Sample rate: 44.1kHz
- Channels: 2-channel Stereo (not surround)
- Max 50MB
- To upload PowerPoints, you will need to convert the file to PDF format first
You can decide if the learner should also be able to download the file. For example you may want your members to download templates, guides, the course syllabus or even additional reading materials.
Embedded Links
If you have video or audio files (e.g. on YouTube), you can also embed these URLs to these files within your course.
Important: As long as the external links allow iframes then the URLs will work within the platform. You need to verify therefore that the link/URL you upload is accessible and visible to learners before publishing your course (you can use the preview feature to do this).
For example for YouTube links you obtain the embedded link as follows:
- Locate the video you'd like to include on your site
- Click Share
- Select Embed
From the code that appears on the page. copy the URL element (this is the part that begins https:// and appears between quotation marks"..."
Paste the https:// url into the ClickLMS platform (Modules < Add Link)
Other Supported file types
- .doc
- .docx
- .rtf
- .jpg
- .jpeg
- .png
Max file size 50MB
You can decide if the learner should also be able to download the file. For example you may want your members to download templates, guides, the course syllabus or even additional reading materials.
2. Live Lessons
You can embed live lessons into your courses - this is a great tool for hosting interactive sessions with your learners.
You do not require any additional software to host your live lesson (webinar), as it's all hosted within your platform and powered by BigBlueButton.
All you need to do is host the lesson from the unique link that will be sent to you upon publishing the course. Your learners access the lesson in the same way they access video content or presentations within the course.
Please take a look at our article which covers advice and recommendations for running live lessons.
3.Face to Face Lessons
If you plan to host sessions outside of the ClickLMS platform, however you want to manage attendance, award CPD/Learning time and issue a certificate automatically, you can do this with the Face to Face Lesson feature.
For example you can include within your course a 6 hour residential training event that is being externally hosted. You will be able to track expected attendance and then confirm attendance and award the correct CPD/Learning Time for each Learner. You can then automatically trigger a certificate to be issued to that Learner upon completion.
4.Assignments
Think of an Assignment like an offline project or question that you could set your Learners. The Assignment element appears in your course module after your Learning Resources and before an end of module Questionnaire.
5. Questionnaires
Help your members validate their learning
- Multiple Choice Questions: Set one or more correct answers.
- Yes/No Questions: Simple true/false answers
- Sequence: Learners must place answers in the correct order
