Assignments

This article covers the core elements of the ClickLMS Assignment feature. This feature is available on all plans.

Think of an Assignment like an offline project or question that you could set your Learners. The Assignment element appears in your course module after your Learning Resources and before an end of module Questionnaire.

An Assignment in a module will be unlocked for a Learner once all preceding Learning Resources have been completed. In turn, the completion of an Assignment will unlock any Questionnaire that appears after it in the module.

What are possible use cases for the new Assignment feature?

You could use this feature as an alternative end of module assessment to a Questionnaire, setting the Learner a project to go away and complete offline. The Learner can then return to your site and upload their Assignment for you to evaluate.

You could also perhaps ask your Learners to reflect on the Learning Resources they have previously watched in the module. For example, they could be asked to watch a video and provide their observations on what went well, or what went wrong for you to review.

Or you could use the Assignment feature to ask your students to provide a full portfolio review of their work to date.

How do I add an Assignment to a module?

The Assignment section is located below the Learning Resources section, and before the Questionnaire.

To add an Assignment simply toggle the control from red to green. Next add an 'Assignment Title' - this title will also appear in all pre-enrolment views. Potential examples could be; Finance Modelling Project, Portfolio Review or Observations from the Video Lecture.

You can then add more details in the 'Assignment Description' section to outline exactly what you are asking a Learner to provide in their Assignment submission. The 'Assignment Description' section will only be displayed to learners who have enrolled to the course.

Ensure these two sections have been saved and that the section is toggled green - it is a simple as that. At all times while building your course you can preview your course in the normal way and you will see the Assignment section as it will appear to learners before they have enrolled to the course.

How is an 'Assignment' displayed to a Learner?

Before enrolling to a course that contains one or more assignments, the Learner will be able to view in the pre-enrolment view that a course contains one or more assignments. This is indicated with an icon and the count of Assignments in the course.

And they can also scroll through the course overview to locate an Assignment in the module.

How does a Learner view the Assignment details and make a submission?

Once the Learner has enrolled in the course, and the Assignment item has activated - i.e. they will have completed all preceding Learning Resources in the module - the Assignment 'Start' button will be enabled. Clicking 'Start' will open the Assignment details page for the Learner.

On the Assignment details page, the Learner can read the 'Assignment Title' and the 'Assignment Description'. There are additional instructions related to the Assignment process, and a file upload container for the Learner to locate and add their Assignment file for submission. Once the file has finished uploading the Learner can click 'Submit'.

What happens when a Learner uploads an assignment? And how do I view their submissions?

When a Learner uploads an Assignment you are notified by email that a new attempt has been uploaded to review newest.

To view any submissions, return to the module where the assignment has been created. Click 'View Submissions' and a new page will open containing all Assignment submissions made by your Learners.

From this page, you can view the status of the submission. You can provide feedback. You can 'Download' their submission and also click 'Evaluate' to 'Pass' or 'Fail' the Assignment for the Learner.

Note: The 'Download' button will only appear when a submission status is either 'Pending Review' or 'Pass'.

Click 'Evaluate' to open a new modal from where you can optionally add any feedback comments to the Learner - these comments will be shared with the Learner via email - then select 'Pass' or 'Fail' based on your evaluation of the Learner's submission.

When you 'Pass' or 'Fail' an Assignment your learners will be notified via email of the outcome. In the case where the Learner has failed they will be advised to return to the site and make a resubmission.

Which file types can learn as upload as submission?

Learners can make an assignment submission using most media files including PDF documents, word documents, Excel sheets, PowerPoint presentations, videos, or photos. If you require a learner to upload more than one file, they can additionally compress these files into a .zip folder for uploading. In fact, the only major far we do not accept are .exe files.

Is there a limit on how many attempts a Learner can submit an Assignment?

A Learner can only submit one Assignment at a time, but if the Assignment is failed by the Administrator or Instructor, the Learner can upload a new Assignment until such time that it is passed by the Administrator or Instructor.

Is there any CPD time linked to an assignment?

At present, that is no CPD time assigned to a Assignment. We are working on potentially adding this feature in the near term. We will provide further details once this has been completed.

Can I force a Learner's Assignment to complete?

Yes, just like you can force other learning resources and questionnaires complete. You can also go to the learner's profile page, view that course enrolments and from there you can select an assignment to force complete.

If an Assignment has been forced complete by your site Administrator, there will be text indicating this case on the 'View Submissions' page, and on the Learner's 'Course Enrolments' page.

Can I have more than one Assignment in a course?

Yes, while you can only have one Assignment per module, you can add multiple modules which can each contain an Assignment.

Can I see in a report which students have completed their assignments?

Yes, in the Course Report you can view this information at a course level. The report contains how many Assignments each learner has completed for the course. There are two new columns of data in the course report. One column is 'Total Course Assignments' and the other column is 'Assignments Completed' by the learner.

Why is the Assignment item not active for my Learners?

In order to activate the Learner Assignment button all preceding, Learning Resources in the module must first be completed. Please check that your Learner has completed all Learning Resources that precede the Assignment in the same module.

Why can my Learner not access the Questionnaire in the module?

Questionnaires can only be accessed once all preceding Learning Resources and any Assignments in the module have been successfully completed or in the case of Assignment past by the instructor. Please check that you're learner has completed all preceding Learning Resources, and that any Assignments have also been successfully completed.

What is the maximum file size a Learner can upload?

The maximum file size is 200 MB. If the original files are larger than 200MB please advise your Learner to use compression software in the case of a video or try compressing the file into a zip folder.

I accidentally failed my Learner's Assignment. Can I change my decision or I accidentally passed my Learner's Assignment? Can I change my decision?

In the case where you accidentally fail a Learner's Assignment, you can simply ask the Learner to make a resubmission. However, if you have accidentally passed a Learner's Assignment, it is not possible to undo this action.

I don't want to receive notifications of Learner submissions. Can I turn these off?

Yes, like other emails on the platform, you can disable the sending of email notifications linked to the Assignments. As the Administrator navigate to the 'Settings' page then select 'Platform Emails' from the left hand menu. On this page, locate the relevant emails and toggle from green to red to disable these emails. You can change this at any time.
