Track a Learner's Location

There are multiple levels of security and deterrents in place to limit the ability of users to copy content and/or use log in details simultaneously. If you believe your content is being accessed from suspect locations or multiple locations using the same log in details you may want to enable IP location tracking.

ClickLMS allows you to track from where and when your learning content is being accessed on your site. You can optionally enable IP location tracking to help identify how frequently your content is being accessed from different locations.

If you enable this feature you may wish to inform your Learners that their IP address is being tracked by updating your Privacy Policy.

How to turn IP location tracking On or Off

Please navigate to the 'Settings' then the 'Analytics & Tracking' page. Scroll to the bottom of the page to locate the 'IP Location Tracking' feature.

By default this feature is disabled, and the toggle will be red. To activate the feature, simply toggle the control from red to green. A confirmation message will drop down on the screen confirming your changes have been implemented.

From the moment the IP Location Tracking feature is enabled, all future activities by your learners will have their IP address and geo location recorded.

How do I see where my content is being accessed from?

If you have enabled the IP Location Tracking feature, you can view where and when a learner has accessed your content. Please navigate to 'Learners' in the header menu and select a learner from the list, to open their 'Profile & Memberships' page. At the bottom of the page a section titled 'Recent Learning Activity' is displayed. The most recent ten records will load, scroll down the page to load further records.

Why is there no data in the 'Recent Learning Activity' table?

IP Locations are only recorded after the IP Location Tracking feature has been enabled. You may see an empty table if the learner has not yet returned to your site, and opened any learning resources since the IP Location Tracking feature was enabled.

Why is the 'Recent Learning Activity' table not showing on a Learner's profile page?

The 'Recent Learning Activity' table will only display when the 'IP Location Tracking' feature is enabled (toggled green). Please return to 'Settings' then 'Analytics & Tracking' to enable the feature. Once it has been enabled any future learning activities will have their IP address and geographic location recorded.

Why do the geographic locations not match with where I know the Learner is accessing the content?

The geographic location is computed based on the IP address where the content is being accessed - there are a couple of circumstances where a Learner's true location may be masked;

1. Learners may be accessing the content from behind a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which can mask a Learner's true location.
2. Learners may be accessing the content from a public Wi-Fi network, which may be routed to the Internet Service Provider's own regional/central location.
