How to drip release modules based on the Learner's course enrolment date

This article explains how you can schedule when Learners should get access to modules in your course using the 'Drip release module content' feature. This allows you to determine the order and timing in which your Learners can access your content.

Note: You need to have 'Course Settings' enabled on your platform to access this feature. If you don't have this feature but would like to find out more about it please get in touch with support@clicklms.com

1. Feature Overview

The 'Drip release module content' feature allows you to control when Learners should get access to your content once they have enrolled to your course.

There are two options to choose from:

1. Grant Learners access to the module after a set number of days of having been enrolled to the course.

2. Grant Learners access to the module after a specific date.

Once you have selected the way you want to drip release your modules to your Learners, you can set a release rule for each of your modules in the course.

You can still grant immediate access to a module - just set the value to 0 or today's date (depending on which drip release method you selected).

Important: You can only edit the drip release module content rules by first removing the course from sale. Then any changes you make will only apply to learners who enrol after you have made your changes and re-published the course. The changes will not apply to Learners who are already enrolled to the course.

2. How to access this feature

Step 1: Click on 'Settings' in the course menu

Note: If you do not have access to this feature but would like to find out more about it please get in touch with support@clicklms.com

Step 2: Select 'Drip release module content' and then choose how you want to release your modules (a number of days after the Learner enrols OR after a specified date).

Step 3: Once you have selected the way you want to drip release your modules to your Learners, you can set a release rule for each of your modules in the course.

  • If you chose 'A number of days after the learner enrols to the course' then you need to enter the number of days against each module. E.g. if you set the number at 7 then Learners will be able to access the module 7 days after they have enrolled to the course. If the Learner tries to start the module sooner they will see an alert telling them the date when they'll be able to access the module.
  • If you chose 'After a specified date' then you need to enter the date when you want the learner to be able to access the module. For example if you enter 10 August 2023, the Learner will not be able to access the module until 10 August 2023. If the Learner tries to start the module sooner they will see an alert telling them the date when they'll be able to access the module.

To grant immediate access to a module just set the value to 0 or today's date (depending on which drip release method you selected).

3. Tips for using the drip release modules feature

  • It is important to set the content navigation setting, and the proposed module access dates, before any Learners are enrolled to the course.
  • If the actual content for the module is not yet ready then as a workaround you could use an image resource as a placeholder to make the module 'valid' and then delete the resource when your actual content is ready to be uploaded.
  • After a Learner enrols to the course, any later changes made to the content navigation setting and/or dates in which modules can be taken/accessed will only apply to future enrolees. These changes would not apply to the learner already enrolled.
  • To edit any of the details on the course 'Settings' page you must first remove the course from sale. You will then be able to edit the settings and re-publish the course.
